Slowly, piece by piece, we are downplaying in history the important role that religion played in the creation and founding of our nation. Without religion the first families may not of ever stepped foot on American soil. Is it important to keep the importance of religion and the role it played in our history?
Because of religious wars and fear of persecution some of the first settlers came to this new world in search for religious freedom. Oppressed and opposed in their homelands for their practices and beliefs.
The very principles and constitutions that the United States was founded on were because of these peoples faith. Did religion have an impact? It most certainly did!
In today’s complex realm of different societies and variations of religions, we have become far to concerned with being politically correct. Fearful of insulting or angering anyone or the way they believe. It began mildly at first with small little cuts or by wording things differently. It has now increased to taking religion out of our national parks and monuments, museums and even history books themselves. We cannot keep trying to ignore the fact–religion clearly helped found our nation! From its birth, religions and religious beliefs have shaped and molded America into the great country it has become!

When the U.S dropped atomic bombs on Japan it became an area of some controversy that continues to this day. In my opinion as an American citizen I feel that it was not only necessary at the time, but vital in pushing the Japanese into surrendering.

In every history book I have ever read or studied about WWII points out the determination and stubbornness of the Japanese people, and how they were not planning on giving up ever. The cost if they didn’t would not only be thousands more Japanese lives, but also thousands more lives of our American men and the lives of our allies.

Was the United States justified in bombing Japan? My answer is yes. And if I was given the responsibility to make that decision again, I would gladly make the same choice. It wasn’t a pleasant thing, the deaths and causality’s, but yes I believe it was necessary and truly believe it swayed the “Japs” into surrendering that probably wouldn’t of happened so soon or perhaps anytime without the action of the bombs.

If America had not made these drastic steps, who knows how long the war may have raged on, the toll it would have on many countries, or how history would have played out since then. Who knows how the outcome would have been, or if our two countries would even still be countries today?

I for one am proud we did what we had too, and stand behind the decision to bomb Japan those days in August, and I know I am not alone in this opinion.

Is the declaration of war ever justified? When American citizens are being harmed and killed, or their rights and property taken from them, do we idly sit by and watch our brothers and sisters freedom diminish, or do we fight for the liberty and freedom of our great nation and its people?
At what point is it justified to defend ourselves by declaring war? This is a very good question. When the rights and lives of American citizens and the future of our nation is threatened—-it is most certainly time to defend and protect ourselves from the enemies.
Our great nation of America, had had many wars in the history of her existence. From the very early Indian wars and the 7 years war, to our most recent war against terrorists and Iraq. Were these and the others including: the War of 1812, World War I & II, Vietnam and Korea, were they also justifiable? My answer would have to be yes! The United States or our allies were invaded and threatened and action was in order to restore protection and freedom for the good people all over the world, and help keep them from harm or destruction.
As Patrick Henry once said “Give me liberty, or give me death!” Americans should never let our rights and freedoms be taken from us. And fighting for them is most certainly justifiable! If war is the in order to protect our rights and lives, let us take action immediately!

Horatio may be a minor role in the great Shakespeare play “Hamlet”; however he is role of great importance to not only the readers of this play but also to the good Prince Hamlet of who Horatio was his closest and dearest friend and confident. Horatio serves two main purposes in this tragedy first as the steadfast friend of the prince and second as the teller of Hamlets life story.

True and faithful, Horatio is the ideal image of friend. Always willing to help and be of service to Hamlet the Prince. They studied together at the University of Wittenburg and were good scholars as well as good friends. Horatio is in truth the man Hamlet would like to be. He is smart and good, but is not driven to any extreme or rash actions because of his intellectual mind. Horatio is willing to trust people and accept the world as it comes to him but is also willing to look for truth and risk his life for those he loves. Hamlet admires and praises Horatio for the qualities he so firmly possesses, that he lacks, such as virtue of truth and self control: “Horatio, thou art e’en as just a man….as e’ver my conversation cop’d withal.” Horatio is a strong character who is unwavering in his friendship and ideals, and Hamlet often longs for the peace of mind he seems to think Horatio possesses.

“Dost thou hear? Since my dear soul was mistress of her choice, and could of men distinguish her election, hath seal’d thee for herself, for thou hast been as one, in suffering all, that suffers nothing, a man that fortune’s buffets and rewards hast ta’en with equal thanks: and blest are those whose blood and judgement are so well commedled that they are not a pipe for fortune’s finger to sound what stop she please. Give me that man that is not passion’s slave, and I will wear him in my heart’s core, ay, in my heart of heart, as i do thee.”

Horatio feels deeply for Hamlet and loves him greatly, but will not try to rule him or persuade him. He remains level-headed and stable and is not “…passion’s slave…” Hamlet and Horatio are different but not so much as to push them away from each other. Hamlet often leaves the other characters of the drama confused but Horatio seems to be able to make out what the Prince wants to express. Their conversations lay a great deal of meaning and ground to the play, and help explain many of Hamlets mysteries that he trusts no one else to tell but his best friend. Horatio easily believes Hamlet even when so many others doubt his sanity, therefore it makes it easier for readers to trust and believe Hamlet as well. Other than Hamlet’s many long soliloquies, his conversations with his friend are the only other true insight into our hero’s thoughts, innermost soul, and feelings.

Why we may ask, other than the fact that they are good friends, does the good Prince trust Horatio so much as in to leave the fate and his story of his life and country in his hands? Hamlet can rely on Horatio for many reasons the main being that from the very beginning of this play he is calm, sensible and intelligent. He is not afraid of the ghost and even demands that it speak if it knows anything that they may need to know “If thou art privy to thy country’s fate ….O, speak! Or if thou hast uphoarded in they life extorted treasure in the womb of earth….Speak of it, stay and speak!” He is everything the Prince needs in a friend at this time.

The good Horatio believes Hamlet in all cases and supports him in all his decisions except one, the very one that costs Hamlet his life just as he had predicted it would. He loves the Prince Hamlet so much that he would rather kill himself by his own hand with the poisoned wine, with honor and duty, than to have to live on after Hamlet’s death. Hamlet however had another plan, a plan that puts Horatio in a place of high importance. This place was to tell his story that he might not be forgotten. With his last breaths he trusts his friend to find a way and the words to tell the truth about his life, and his fathers in the confusing times he must know is coming to his dear country of Denmark.“If thou didst ever hold me in thy heart…Absent thee from felicity a while…and in this harsh world draw thy breath is pain…to tell my story.” Entrusting this task to Horatio shows his true love for his friend better than any gifts of words he could have spoken. Therefore in the end Hamlet, the readers hero, becomes a little more like his idol and friend Horatio accepting his fate of death and the evil in the world.

Horatio remains after all the other main characters have fallen, so was he really such a minor character? He remains as a pure example of friendship of the most precious kind. True and unselfish, he is a friend that any person no matter what age they may be or what time era they live in would be proud to have!

OLD ESSAY FROM HIGH SCHOOL

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

“ So in two seconds away we went a-sliding down the river, and it did seem so good to be free again and all by ourselves on the big river and nowbody to bother us.” This quote undoubtly shows passion, but not in a fancy way. When this quote is first read one might even have to read it twice to get it. However, the readers attention is easily grabbed. It may not be formally wrote or grammatically correct, but readers can connect and understand it! This is how the great American author Mark Twain writes, plainly in easy coherent language and we love it! Twain draws readers in and keeps their attention no matter where at in his works. The whole book of Huck Finn is full of a then new style—written as the boy Huck and those around him would have truly spoken.

In the beginning of Mark Twains the- Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain uses the simple way of the colloquial language to stretch and draw out Huck’s thoughts and feelings, this at times may cause some confusion or completely lose the reader; however, one will find as they continue to read his book and get into Huckleberry’s adventures that they will adapt and soon learn to enjoy this informal language.

Huckleberry, as unlearned as he may be is still very vivid in his thoughts and feelings. He may express them quite plainly and upfront, but readers can see that it comes from his heart and this connects very well with them. He even tries his hand at poetry, for poor dead Miss. Emmaline, and though it may not of been very promising it proves that everyone has a bit of poet in them.

The dialect used in this piece of Twains work, shows the southern way of life in a middle class to poor setting. Slow and easy country charm is clearly visible, with an added touch of Huck’s very own special personality. The dialect and language used in this book gives it the character it has and is what helps make it such a well remembered classic.

Reading the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, can open readers eyes to not only a different way of writing but also to new ways of thinking and ways to express themselves. Learning and enjoying life as he went along is how Huck Finn thrived in his adventures. Readers will feel transformed and right there beside him as they read this work, “…so good to be free…all by ourselves on the big river and nowbody to bother us”!!!

In the middle 1800’s, a man by the name of Amos Kenndal donated 2 acres to start a school for deaf and blind students; little did he know how much his small contribution of kindness would grow. “From such modest beginnings evolved the comprehensive University of international importance that exists today.” Now in 2008, a little over 140 years later, his act in trying to help these students has grown into the famous Gallaudet University; the only university in the world to offer higher education programs completely and specifically designed for deaf or hard of hearing students.

Established in 1864, the location is placed in the beautiful and industrious city of Washington D.C. where it is perfectly stationed in a special part of America. It is not only a college to the students that attend there but it is also “a home away from home” and their life. The university offers a “barrier-free communication environment.” Home to 3,000 plus students, this school is not only growing in numbers of students, but also in state, national and world-wide fame!

At Gallaudet University, deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing students and scholars join together in a unique community to learn, to teach, and to create. Full access and open communication drive the Gallaudet University vision. This means that no matter what your background might be, your welcome is assured. Once here, you will discover that the university brims with academic and social opportunities, promising you a rich, varied experience throughout your stay on campus.

Students can choose from over 40 majors to acquire as well as some other bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degrees .“The courses are designed to prepare students to spend their professional or social lives after graduation, in the deaf community or, to make further contributions in a chosen academic discipline.”

To perspective students; whether they are deaf, hard of hearing or even hearing, Gallaudet says this about their university: “Here, unequaled internship, employment, cultural and entertainment abound.” (Gallaudet University) Hearing students are also welcomed kindly here as well: “The University also admits a small number of hearing, degree-seeking undergraduate students-up to 5 percent of an entering class; however it is more expensive for them which makes it even harder for them to attend here. For a hearing student that is a United State’s Citizen, it costs approximately $18,980 and for a hearing international student it costs approximately $29,200 those are both just the cost for one year of tuition not counting your books and some additional fees. Hearing students however continue to apply and seem to enjoy going to this deaf and hard of hearing school!

Gallaudet University is the world leader in liberal education and career development for deaf and hard-of-hearing undergraduate students. The University enjoys an international reputation for the outstanding graduate programs it provides deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students, as well as for the quality of the research it conducts on the history, language, culture, and other topics related to deaf people.

There are an estimated 235,688,000 people in the U.S and approximately 20,295,000 of them are deaf or hard of hearing. That’s 8.6% of the U.S’s population. For anyone interested in the deaf or Deaf people or American Sign Language, Gallaudet University is the place to go look, explore and find your answers. Whether you are a hearing person with a love to help or learn, been not hearing your whole life, or are simply hard of hearing; Gallaudet offers many helpful websites on their school’s homepage and are very open and willing to help anyone who is curious about their programs or history. Gallaudet as the only leader in higher education for over a hundred years, is definitely the best place to go and learn more about the Deaf and the amazing institution they have developed there!

Looking to the future of this great university:

Today, Gallaudet is not only one of the Washington area’s largest businesses in terms of salaries and benefits paid to employees and money spent on goods and services, it also is viewed by deaf and hearing people alike as a primary resource for all things related to deaf people, including educational and career opportunities, communication access, Deaf History, Language and Culture, and the impact of technology on the deaf community.

This college is a very important part of Deaf cultures and communities world-wide, and I believe it should also be important to the hearing people of the world. I am very proud as an American that we are home to this university and that it is open to so many students no matter where they are from or what their demographic background is. “Visiting Gallaudet’s campus…is the best way to learn about the breadth of our academic programs and to see our state-of-the-art facilities.” (Gallaudet University:Campus Tours) Visiting Gallaudet University is definitely something I would like to see happen in my future, and I look forward to touring it as many others have in the past including: presidents, kings and queens and people from all over the planet.

“Once you rose into shining, they lived; when you sink to rest, they shall die. For it is you who are Time itself, the span of the world; life is by means of you.” (Akhenaten 46) This quote is describing the worship the Pharaoh Akhenaten and the Egyptian people gave to Aten their living sun god. To them he was the giver and provider of not only their lives, but also all life on earth. This early Egyptian piece of poetry is paying homage in a sort to a god of their time. It seeks to flatter and worship Aten so that he will continue to bless his son the pharaoh and his obedient followers.

Akhenaten’s “Hymn to the Sun” is a poem that is an important piece of work because it is not just a great piece of ancient Egyptian poetry but it also describes a religion and way of life of the people there at one time for history.

An aspect of this work that could relate to today’s modern Americans is the thought of one god who is the creator of all things on earth and giver of life. America, in percentage, is a mostly Christian nation; therefore one god to worship is the same here in the United States, as it was in Akhenaten’s reign in a sense of being under the power and authority of one god.

Evidence of a plot within this work is not seen.

Human nature is presented in this poem through the discussions of the human life cycle. It talks about the conception and birth of children. And is also visible through how Akhenaten is attempting to draw himself closer to the sun god through flowery words and diligent worship.

This is a piece that is all about religion. It is in honor of Akhenaten’s god-Aten, the sun god. He is presented as the giver of life on earth, the light and life of the world, who protects man and beast alike and provides them the means to survive on earth. All sources of life and true happiness come from Aten. The entirety of mankind can see his glory through the rays of the sun and see the goodness he brings to them and their lives.

The interconnectness of man and nature can be seen in this work through the ways life is presented. Through the sun they thrive together living in harmony and using each other to prosper and grow.

An eternal conflict is not shown in this early Egyptian piece.

The genre of this work is a hymn of poetry. Some of the conventions of the poetry genre often include many references of symbolic means, alliteration, rhythm, and descriptive or flowery language as it tells a story in a verse. This piece conforms to these and the other conventions of poetry; mainly, in the areas of symbolism and flowery language.

No elements of the “heros journey” exist in this work.

Akhenaten is a new kingdom pharaoh. (Akhenaten 41) He attempted to change the religious beliefs and ceremonies of Egypt during his reign. As pharaoh he broke with tradition and tried to get his people to believe in only one god. This was a totally new concept for the Egyptians and greatly changed the outlook of the people on religion and their ruler. Akhenaten presented himself as the son of the sun god and the messenger from Aten to the people. He had all names of previous gods struck out of inscriptions and himself and the royal family lifted up the new living sun god-Aten for all to see. (Akhenaten 41)

“You are the one God, shining forth from your possible incarnations as Aten, the Living Sun, Reveled like a king in glory, risen in light, now distant, now bending nearby. You create the numberless things of this world from yourself, who are One alone—cities, towns, fields, the roadway, the river; And each eye looks back and beholds you to learn from the day’s light perfection. O God, you are in the Sun-disk of Day, Over-Seer of all Creation…” (Akhenaten 45-46) This piece of historical Egyptian poetry is truly special, and causes one to think beyond the words themselves and see the true inner meaning of what they are describing. To anyone that is religious they should find this hymn to be well worth their time and effort, and even if many who read it are not, each and everyone who does, should still be impressed with this ancient work of literature.

Television has made a huge impact on the outcome of our nations political elections. In these times of modern technology we as humans have became a very visual based people. One of the most important impacts on our lives comes through television whether we’re adults or children a good majority of each individuals daily life may be spent viewing television. Therefore it is no surprise that after politics and political candidates started being covered in the 1960’s with TV that it had a large impact on the people and raised interest of the happenings of various campaigns and elections. Since those times politics in the media have continued to be covered and grow in TV. It is how the struggle for power in America gets to us.

TV has been so successful at doing this because most importantly it is a visual way of communicating that is easy to connect to and grasp. No matter who one is or where one may live in the U.S. we are all attracted to things that we can see. “Television had won the nation away from sound to images.” (Source C) People like to see and not only hear, if we can see them we can form a better opinion of the individual and discover things we like and dislike visually that we couldn’t have when before the 60’s had only the radio to rely on as media. Since the time of the first TV coverage “Our national politics has become a competition for images or between images…” and we like it! (Source C)

One cannot argue that television hasn’t impacted the mass majority of people and hyped their interest in politics and voting. It is true, it has, and it will continue to do so.

Since the founding of our great nation and the growth of our political realm by huge increments, it became harder and harder for the Average Joe to be involved and understand all that was going on politically and choose from the many candidates available. “As we grew we lost this feeling of direct contact—television has now restored it.” (Source A)

After more coverage from the media came into play with TV there was a boost of interest in politics from all age groups, a much needed boost! In the time of the 60’s, rebellion and diversity caused more separation and discord, and broadcasting debates and addresses to the people helped unite them in a way like never before. “…great contributions…of television…presumed capacity to inform and stimulate the political interests of the American…” (Source A) Has that been a good thing? I don’t think that can be argued either!

However in contrast, there are some negative elements that have come out of this broadcasting as well and cannot be ignored. People tend to have short attention spans sometimes, so the media had discovered that they need to have something that will catch the viewers attention and draw them in. So, one way of doing this is to make the coverage entertaining and exciting, more than informative and deep.

In the TV media today bad stories will outnumber the good ones 3-1, because good news is often not as exciting or dramatic as bad news. Sex lives and digging up things from the candidates or elected officials lives gets more attention from the public so that is a lot of what they focus on anymore.

“…phenomenology of politics: (1) because of televisions celebrity system, Presidents are losing their distinctiveness as social actors and hence are often judged by standards formally used to assess rock singers and movie stars; (2) because of television’s sense of intimacy, the American people feel they know their Presidents as persons and hence no longer feel the need for party guidance; (3) because of the medium’s archly cynical worldview, those who watch politics on television are increasingly turning away from the policy sphere, years of hyperfamiliarity having finally bred contempt for politics itself.” (Source B)

With only a limited amount of time to broadcast on TV the media must choose what will be covered. So if focus is mainly on what the latest dirty scoop is, then not enough time will be allowed for what should really influence the people—the true character of a candidate or political figure. Too much time and energy is poured into digging up dirt on politicians, when more of it should be focused on their ideals and beliefs. Much more is happening than can be covered so they decide who and what gets covered at what time if any. One must be careful about believing everything they see and hear on TV for this very reason. It could be very easy for a station to be based to strongly in one party’s favor, or become corrupt.

It is obvious—the television media is powerful! Influence from it can come in both good and bad forms. What it all comes down to is the main question of: The media determines what we know, or does it? And how much impact does it have on what we believe?

Broadcasting politics through television has been very successful, needed, and a great attribute, and will continue to be hopefully, if it will try to stay true to what it was started as—to inform and equip the people to be more involved and connected to politics in the United States.

Each and everyone must critically decide what to take in and let influence them. We need to be well rounded and remain open-minded to all elements, not simply relying on television alone for our information. This will enable us to make well informed decisions about the future leaders of our country and help keep American a true and united nation!

In America, many people are tired of the rising fuel costs and foreign policies, but do not feel as if they have much say or choice about it. However, actually, there is a choice and a solution; the opportunity lies in alternative fuels. A great need lies in coming up with new energy sources to provide the U.S with renewable fuels. Two solutions to the fuel crisis’ in America, are through alternative biofuels such as biodiesel and ethanol.

Why should the United States depend so heavily on foreign oil and petroleum fuels when there is a much easier and available alternative right at the nations finger tips? Indifferent or lazy, most people simply pay the rising prices for this fuel and then grumble unceasingly about the high costs. Depending so much on fuel from other countries is a problem.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney expands on the America’s fuel crisis in this statement,

For too long, America has been entangled with and dependent on foreign suppliers of oil. Since the 1970s, Americans have endured and been vulnerable to economic shocks caused by our reliance on foreign oil. In recent years, the price of oil has tripled, putting pressure on the American economy. As long as America imports much of our oil from unstable regions and countries around the world, our national security and economic prosperity is threatened. (Romney).

Made from field crops, already produced in the United States, that are easily accessible and available to use, the production and usage of biofuels provides a profitable and brighter path to lowering the States fuel costs and economic crisis of oil and gas within our nation. Biofuels can very easily be competitive with forms of petroleum fuels such as traditional gasoline and diesel, and can play a very important role in reducing the United States addiction to foreign oil, and the key to its success is to start now!

Bio-diesel and Ethanol are two separate types of fuel. To address the confusion between them: Biodiesel is derived from oil-based crops. Such crops often include soybeans, sunflowers, canola, or cottonseed (Calaway 19). Ethanol is derived from a fermentation process to produce a product equivalent to moonshine or liquor. This is then blended with petroleum based gasoline to reduce the need for traditional fuel (Calaway 19). Stated by Merriam-Webster Dictionary, their definitions are: “Biodiesel: a fuel that is similar to diesel fuel and is derived from usually vegetable sources” (“Biodiesel”). “Ethanol: a colorless volatile flammable liquid C2H5OH that is the intoxicating agent in liquors and is also used as a solvent and in fuel” (“Ethanol”).

The demand for biodiesel is on a steady climb. Because the availability of the sources needed to produce it, accessible from large and small farmers and producers alike, producing this renewable fuel is helping not only the middle man but all of mankind. “Biodiesel blends run smoothly in engines across the United States” (Bremer 4-A). According to the National Biodiesel Board, approximately 165 biodiesel plants are in operation in the U.S. producing an average of 11.2 million gallons a year (Johnson 11). Although biodiesel often gets more attention than its relative ethanol, one cannotoverlook the important role ethanol plays in the solution to America’s fuel crisis. “Ethanol is not direct competition to…biodiesel” (Bremer 4-A). Often told that ethanol based fuels have little impact on the nation’s dependency of foreign oil…one most consider the latest boost it is giving the economy. “Ethanol is replacing 200 million barrels of imported oil per year. With the price of oil above $80 per barrel, ethanol’s impact on oil imports alone is more than $16 billion dollars” (Tolman 4-B).

Born and raised in a small, rural community, I am a 6th generation farmer and help farm and ranch on my family’s farm that was established before statehood. My family’s roots are deep in not only years here but agriculture as well. Producing the crops that biofuels are made from is something we as a family farm operation have always participated in, so biofuels is something that we can connect to. The production and use of biofuels in the United States will help farmers like myself and my family’s livelihood and help keep our heritage alive, by raising crop prices and increasing the demand for field crops. We can not only grow the crops needed to produce biodiesel and ethanol but can also turn around and very easily use the biofuels on our farm and ranch, therefore using the very fuel we help make, to run in our vehicles and farm implements. Not only does it create different options of how to sell our products, but it also gives us more potential assets and a different infrastructure of how to sell and invest for our future with new revenue options. There is plenty of fertile farm land in the U.S to produce the fuels and with the raising popularity of biofuels, it will help encourage farmers to stick with farming, knowing that there will be a more secure future market for their crops.

Still, one may ask how will producing and using these biofuels aid America in the current oil and fuel crisis? This question has many available answers, the most important and popular answer revolves around fuel policies and prices. The production and use of these American made alternative fuels, will reduce our reliance on foreign fuels and cut fuel cost at the pump a great deal. Instead of having to pay the foreigners demanded price, and also pay for the shipment to here, we would only have to pay for the growth of the crops they are made from, production costs and shipment within our own country. Which keeps more of our money and assets with in our nation and helps support many people and farmers within our economy. Wouldn’t Americans much rather pay out their monies to our own people who care about us and the future of our country, than to be paying some foreigner who is only in it for the money and doesn’t care about us? The production and use of biofuels in the States could make huge advances in cutting the reliance we have on foreign fuels and make us more dependent and strong, because we would have a more solid footing to grow on and progress with. Renewable fuels such as biodiesel and ethanol offer improved energy security by displacing petroleum and our dependency on fuels outside the country. Biofuels may appear less competitive than the traditional petroleum fuels, but the long term view of the economic boost it presents is tremendous; and the net it will provide for our country, will be very positive.

Initially, in conclusion, it is going to take much more than environmentalists, farmers, and visionary businessmen to make biofuels a successful and productive fuelalternative in the United States of America. It is going to take a vast majority of the American people to be open to a promising, but different change, and be willing to let alternative fuels take a lead in the oil market. The key lies in starting that change now!!! Standing in the way of this new economic and agriculture growth will only hurt Americans in the long run, instead of helping them.

Theodore Roosevelt once stated, “The ultimate way to bring this nation to ruin, or preventing all possibility of it continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities. We have but one flag; we must also learn one language, and that language is English” (Roosevelt). Indeed, in the United States, English should be the official language because we need a strong central language to unite all citizens, and it will help immigrants connect and succeed in America.

Throughout our history people from nations all over the world have come to America to make it their home, bringing with them their own languages. However, in order to become an U.S. citizen, immigrants should be required to have a good understanding of the English language, at the very least, enough knowledge of it to be on a solid communication level. James M. Inhofe, U.S. Senator from Oklahoma, is very passionate about this cause. Inhofe had this to say in a speech statement on August 3rd 2006: “A nation certain of its language and culture can continue to be a welcoming nation to legal immigrants. A nation with uncontrolled borders and no convictions about what it expects immigrants to do once they arrive will soon become a nation in name only” (Inhofe). Senator Inhofe also has a pole on his website. On this pole viewers are asked to vote on whether or not they think English should be the official language of the United States. An astounding 89% are in favor with only 12% in disagreement. English is the most commonly used language in the States, and making it the official language would aid and benefit immigrants in their education, business, and social networks, as it is the central language for success here in the states (Inhofe). “English is the language of business, higher education, diplomacy, aviation, the Internet, science, popular music, entertainment, and international travel. All signs point to its continued acceptance across the planet” (Mujica).

Understanding that America is a very good place to live, a land of many opportunities and freedoms, and why foreigners would want to come and live here, they should be willing to learn our language, English, in return. The late Senator S.I. Hayakawa writes in his essay in The Power of Language, The Language of Power, “English unites us as American-immigrants and native born alike. Communicating with each other in a single, common tongue encourages trust, while reducing racial hostility and bigotry” (Hayakawa 129). As an immigrant himself, he understands the importance of learning and keeping English in the States. U.S. ENGLISH, Inc, a website for the public interest group founded by Hayakawa, states about their group that “U.S.ENGLISH believes that the passage of English as the official language will help to expand opportunities for immigrants to learn and speak English, the single greatest empowering tool that immigrants must have to succeed” (“Making English”).

If we did not have a central government to rule and protect the people, it would lead to a disunited states. Likewise not having a central language to unite the people and government together, would also lead to devastating and disunited chaos for our country and our futures! “Declaring English to be our official language would bring back the incentive to learn it. Specifically, this step would require that all laws, public proceedings, regulations, publications, orders, actions, programs, and policies are conducted in the English language” (Mujica). Everyone would then learn English, and we could all communicate and learn more efficiently with and from each other. No longer would there be a need to print in more than one language–which could lead to lower manufacturing and commercial costs, on top of the other social and political benefits.

All that is written here is not meant to suggest that English has to be the only language spoken in the United States, only that all means of government, laws, advertising, programs and public affairs, etc be handled in English. “Official English laws are not directed at the language people themselves choose to speak but, rather, in what language the Government speaks to the American people” (Inhofe). Each and everyone has and should have the right to speak their native tongue in their own homes in order to continue their heritage and beliefs.

The need has never been greater or the time better to take a stand and make English the official and professional language of the great United States Of America! Let us all unite and work towards progressing and championing for this cause!
